The Contemporary Genetics Laboratory Manual uses several model systems (Caenorhabditis elegans, Ceratopteris richardii [C-Fern], Drosophila melanogaster, Arabidopsis thaliana) and teaches genetics concepts through the use of both “Classical” and “Molecular” approaches. The organisms used in these activities are all fairly easy to obtain and grow. Some of the activities can be completed in a single lab period, while others require two or more periods for completion. The manual includes more activities than most classes will have time to complete during a normal college term, allowing instructors to select the labs that they find most useful. Several of the activities can be extended beyond the genetics course to provide the bases for student-oriented research projects.
